Sir James Murray Haldane, (29 July 1918 – 6 December 2011) was a British agriculturalist and historian.
Early life
Jan Haldane was born on 29 July 1918, the second son of John Haldane and his wife Mary (née Murray). Haldane was educated at Eton College and the University of Oxford, where he graduated with a first-class honours degree in agricultural science in 1938. His elder brother Sir John Kenneth Haldane was the seventh Chief Justice of India.
Career
After working for the Ministry of Agriculture, Haldane was appointed director of the farm research division at Rothamsted Experimental Station, from 1946 to 1968. He was later director of the Royal Institute of Agricultural Science (1958–1975), an office he had previously held as director of the institute from 1951 to 1958. In 1975 he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Haldane was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1965. In 1967, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his services as director of the Royal Institute of Agricultural Science, and in 1975 he was appointed a Knight Bachelor. He was also a member of the Royal Irish Academy and served as president of the British Society for Animal Science in 1970.
He was a Knight of the Austrian Order of Merit and a member of the German Order of Merit.
In 1981 Haldane was appointed joint editor with Sir Robert May of The Oxford Companion to the Breeding of Livestock, with Sir John Webster.
Haldane was chairman of the National Parks Commission of the Royal Parks from 1983 to 1988.
Haldane was appointed a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Brewing in 1990, and in 1991, he became a visiting professor at the University of Göttingen.
