Bollywood actor and filmmaker Dev Anand passed away at the age of 74 in Mumbai early on Thursday. His son Yuvraaj said that he died of cardiac arrest. He was admitted to Holy Family Hospital on Wednesday night after he complained of chest pain.
Anand, who was best known as the actor-turned-director of the films 'Devdas', 'Sujata', 'Mera Naam Joker', 'Namak Halaal', 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro', 'Anari', 'Do Anjaane', 'Chori Chori' and 'Abdullah: The Fish Seller', was a Punjabi from Patiala.
He hailed from a Sikh family and had converted to Hinduism before marriage. He was a Parsi by religion.
This year's edition of IMPS saw the presence of the iconic filmmaker in the top 10 list. The 79-year-old was ranked at number 7 and made the cut this year after being absent for three consecutive years.
Anand's last two films 'Namak Halaal' and 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro' were also big hits. He won the National Film Award for 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro' in 1989 for the best direction, and was also nominated for the best actor, though he failed to bag the statuette.
He won the National Film Award for the second time in 1999 for 'Maqbool'.
The National Film Awards were instituted in 1954 and the awards ceremony is held every year in February.
The 69th edition of the awards is being held in February, and will be telecast on the eve of the awards on February 9. The awards ceremony will be broadcast on Star Plus.

Anand is survived by his wife Geeta Anand, a son Yuvraaj Anand, two daughters Tanuja Anand and Archana Anand and a son in law Anand Mohan Anand.
